1/3 cup butter at room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
1 3/4 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
scant 1/2 tsp salt
2 large ripe bananas, peeled
large bowl and wooden spoon for the batter
small bowl and fork for the bananas
sifter for the dry ingredients

Have your child smoosh the bananas with the fork and grease (with butter) a standard loaf pan while you get everything else measured. The flour through salt go in the sifter.
Cream the butter and sugar together well, then add the eggs.
Add one third of the flour mixture, half the bananas, half the remaining flour, the rest of the bananas, and the rest of the flour, mixing thoroughly after each addition.
Put the batter in the loaf pan and bake at 350 F for 50 minutes. I've found it takes a little longer in a gas oven than an electric, so check that the sides of the loaf are a little pulled away from the pan.
When it's baked, turn it out of the pan immediately to cool (or be ravenously consumed by offspring). Store as you'd store any bread, if it lasts long enough to put away.
